Simon the cat, long time greeter and social director for St. Francis Veterinary Clinic, died Wednesday January 25th, 2012. He came to the clinic as a young vagrant off the streets and adapted to clinic life very well. Simon spent a lot of his time dozing on the front desk, keeping the counter warm. He enjoyed a good brushing and spent his afternoons basking in the sunshine of the lobby.
Simon made an excellent clinic cat because of his friendly disposition. He loved attention and affection, and his loud purr could drown out conversations. Simon especially loved to hug people-- he would put his paws around your neck and press his nose into your face. He comforted many clients and pets during his 17 years.
While Simon was renowned for his good nature as a clinic mascot, he was actually one of our worst-behaved patients! If he needed his ears cleaned or temperature taken, gentle Simon suddenly turned into all teeth and claws. Last year, we needed to draw some blood for diagnostics, and Simon was furious. He began urinating-- so hard that the stream hit the far wall! Simon still had to get his bloodwork done, but his antics kept the whole staff laughing for the day.
Luckily, Simon didn't have to spend a lot of time as a patient. He lived a long and happy life as a part of the St. Francis team. He captivated many people with his ice-blue, almost-crossed eyes and charming personality. Even as a senior, he liked to play hide-and-go seek. You could say, "Simon, come and get me!" and run to another room, and he would follow you. He would peek around the corner and give his almost-silent "meow," then he was ready to play again.
Simon enjoyed the luxury of life as a real housecat in his final months. He was "retired" to Dr. Stone's home in the summer, where he enjoyed a quieter life, with big beds to sleep on. Simon is survived by his fellow clinic cats, Gloria and Frankie. He will be greatly missed by all the staff at St. Francis and his many client friends.
